The two specs that matter most here are SHGC (Solar Heat Gain Coefficient) and U-Factor. SHGC measures how much solar heat passes through the glass.

U-Factor measures how much heat transfers through the window overall. Lower numbers mean better performance in hot climates.

To earn ENERGY STAR certification in Florida’s Southern climate zone, a window must have a U-Factor of 0.32 or lower and an SHGC of 0.23 or lower.

Windows that miss either number aren’t certified for this region, regardless of how they’re marketed.

The Technology Behind the Numbers

Low-E Glass Coatings

Low-emissivity (Low-E) coatings are microscopically thin metallic layers applied to the glass surface. They reflect infrared light (heat) while letting visible light through. In a hot climate, the coating is typically placed on the inner surface of the outer pane, blocking heat before it enters the room.

Double-Pane Construction

Triple-pane windows are worth the cost in Minneapolis. In northwest Florida, they’re not. High-performance double-pane windows with Low-E coatings and argon gas fill deliver the best value for this climate. The incremental performance gain from a third pane doesn’t justify the price difference here.

Argon Gas Fill

Argon is denser than air and transfers heat more slowly. Filling the space between panes with argon improves the window’s insulating performance without changing how it looks or operates.

Aluminum frames are still common in older Florida homes, but they conduct heat readily and will undermine the performance of even a high-quality glass unit. Vinyl is the most cost-effective replacement. Fiberglass performs slightly better and handles the climate exceptionally well, but at a higher upfront cost.

Impact Windows: Efficiency and Storm Protection Together

Along the Gulf Coast, the window conversation often includes storm protection, and the two goals don’t conflict. Impact-rated windows can also carry Low-E coatings and argon fill. You get certified energy performance and the structural protection required in Florida’s high-velocity hurricane zones.

There’s a financial case here beyond energy savings. Homeowners with impact windows can qualify for windstorm insurance discounts. The Florida Department of Financial Services reports that participants in the My Safe Florida Home program save an average of $932 per year on insurance premiums after installing qualifying impact upgrades.

What to Look For in a Certified Impact Window

  • Meets Florida Building Code (FBC) impact requirements for your wind zone
  • ENERGY STAR certified for the Southern climate zone (U-Factor ≤ 0.32, SHGC ≤ 0.23)
  • NFRC label present on the glass for verified performance ratings
  • Installed by a contractor licensed in Florida (required for insurance credits to apply)

Reading an NFRC Label

Every window sold in the U.S. through a certified manufacturer carries an NFRC (National Fenestration Rating Council) label. It looks like a nutrition label for windows. Here’s what each number means for buyers in this region:

  • U-Factor: Look for 0.32 or lower. Lower is better. This measures total heat transfer through the window.
  • SHGC: Look for 0.23 or lower for ENERGY STAR certification here. This is the number that controls how much solar heat enters your home.
  • VT (Visible Transmittance): Ranges from 0 to 1. Higher means more natural light. A good Low-E window typically lands in the 0.40–0.70 range.
  • Air Leakage: Optional on the label, but 0.30 or lower is the benchmark. Lower is better.

 

When getting quotes from contractors, ask them to include the brand name, model, U-Factor, and SHGC in writing. Installers frequently leave these details off estimates, which makes it impossible to compare products accurately.

Financial Incentives Currently Available

The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (30% of window costs, up to $600/year) expired on December 31, 2025. Windows installed before that date are still eligible on those tax returns, but no replacement federal credit has been enacted as of 2026.

State and utility incentives are still active:

  • My Safe Florida Home (MSFH) Program: Matching grants covering up to two-thirds of qualifying upgrade costs, capped at $10,000. Open to Florida homeowners for hurricane-resistant improvements including impact windows. Any certified Florida contractor is eligible to perform the work as of July 2024.
  • Duke Energy Window Rebate: $4 per square foot on qualifying east-, west-, and south-facing windows (up to $800). Requires a Home Energy Check and a window with SHGC ≤ 0.21 and U-Factor ≤ 0.27. This updated program went into effect May 2025.
  • PACE Financing: Available in many Florida counties. Covers 100% of project costs with repayment through your property tax bill. No money down.
  • Insurance Premium Discounts: Windstorm coverage discounts up to 45% are available for qualifying impact window installations. The discount amount depends on your insurer and the wind-resistance rating of the windows installed.

Signs Your Current Windows Are Working Against You

These aren’t vague warning signs. They’re measurable problems:

  • Rooms near large windows feel noticeably warmer than the rest of the house, even with the AC running

Installation Matters as Much as the Product

A high-performance window in a poorly prepared opening will underperform. Air leaks around the frame, gaps in the flashing, or improper shimming can push a well-rated window’s real-world performance well below its NFRC label. Florida’s humidity makes this especially relevant: moisture that gets behind the frame causes rot, mold, and structural damage that shows up long after the installers are gone.

Ask any contractor how they handle flashing at the sill and head of the opening, and how they air-seal around the frame before trimming. A quality installation takes longer than a rushed one. That time is worth paying for.

What to Ask Before You Buy

Over 80% of homebuyers rate energy efficiency as an important feature when evaluating homes, according to recent buyer surveys. The windows you install now will be part of that conversation when you sell. ENERGY STAR certification is a transferable, verifiable claim that appraisers and buyers recognize.

Before signing any contract, ask these questions:

  • Are these windows ENERGY STAR certified for the Southern climate zone?
  • What are the exact U-Factor and SHGC ratings for this product?
  • Do they meet Florida Building Code impact requirements for our wind zone?
  • What does the installation warranty cover, and for how long?
  • Will the installation qualify for any current utility rebates or the My Safe Florida Home program?
