None of these are exotic requests. They’re just common enough on custom and older homes in this area that a stock big-box window can’t handle most of them without an ugly workaround.

The Coastal Wind Code Still Applies

Custom doesn’t mean exempt from code. Escambia and Santa Rosa counties fall under Florida Building Code wind speed maps that generally place this stretch of coastline in the 140-150 mph design range, tapering down further inland.

Wood-clad windows still get specified on historic and high-end custom homes where the interior needs a wood look, with an exterior aluminum or fiberglass cladding to handle weather exposure.

Vinyl remains an option for custom sizing on a tighter budget, though very large custom openings sometimes exceed what vinyl framing can structurally support without added reinforcement.

Marvin is another manufacturer known for handling architect-specified custom shapes on higher-end builds.

PGT Innovations, based in Venice, Florida, makes impact-rated windows through its CGI and WinDoor lines and has experience with the odd-shaped openings common in Florida coastal architecture, since that’s the market the company was built around.

What the Custom Process Looks Like
